This is a 45 rpm original 1979 version of Gary Numan's 'CARS'
It still plays! Original 1979, 45 RPM, Purchased at Sam Goody

Life before Spotify, you hear a song on the radio like 'Same Old Madness' by Ministry or 'Metal' by Gary Numan and suddenly its musical tentacles wrap themselves around your amygdala.

What’s an amygdala?

No idea.

But somehow that weird little brain section instantly decides:

“You now love this song forever.”

The problem?

It’s 1984.

There’s no Spotify. No YouTube. No Shazam. No rewind button. No “save to playlist.”

So your friend screams:

“WAIT! I’LL RECORD IT!”

Then begins the panic.

You frantically search for a blank spot on a cassette tape that already contains six different partially taped-over songs, two accidental radio commercials, and the beginning of somebody yelling at their mom.

Too late.

You missed it.

Gone.

Out of luck.

At that point, your options became truly ridiculous.

You could call the radio station using your beige rotary phone with the thirty-foot tightly twisted cord you stretched halfway across the house because cordless phones basically belonged to NASA at the time.

And maybe — if the DJ actually answered — they might remember what they had just played.

Or care.

Another option was visiting Sam Goody and attempting to sing the lyrics to a deeply annoyed teenage snot-nosed stock clerk while confidently butchering every word.

“Uh… I think the chorus goes:‘Something something same old madness…?’”

Good luck with that.

One reason life before Spotify felt different was that there was no guarantee you'd ever hear a song again. You simply waited and hoped the station played the song again someday.

Except sometimes they didn’t.

Ever.

That’s the part younger generations will probably never fully understand:

Before streaming, songs could genuinely disappear from your life for years.

Maybe forever.

That scarcity made music feel magical.

Waiting and wondering were best friends.

Thankfully, decades later, my best friend has managed to track down hundreds of those lost songs that slipped through our fingers somewhere between bad reception, cassette tape chaos, and memory (cost too). More on this soon.

Looking back, life before Spotify may have been less convenient, but it made discovering music feel far more personal.

Thanks for being here.
